The store at the lake only has select tackle and is more expensive than the general store, so you don't want to use the lake store if you can avoid it. When you are at your home location and not at a lake you have access to the general store that has all items in the game. This brings us to planning your fishing trips. The main reason to travel home is to upgrade or repair your gear or to fish at a different location.

You want to minimize traveling home because of the travel cost. This can differ from species to species but generally speaking you want to stick to the times that are indicated in the graph when you open your map at the lake. When you have a smaller net you also want to use the advance time feature to fish at times that yield more fish. After 9pm and before 5am there are currently no fish to catch.
